Hello
👋
I'm Nick Ray

I build apps and sites.

Senior Software Engineer working at Wikipedia and based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

About Me

I am currently a senior software engineer at Wikipedia. As one might imagine, a site that averages over 20 billion total monthly page views and contributes free knowledge across the world in over 300 languages has a multitude of interesting technical and social challenges.

While at Wikipedia, I've enjoyed working on features visible on the mobile and desktop sites. Most recently, I've been building featues for the first major update to the desktop skin in over a decade. As part of the project, I implemented a new limited width design intended to improve the reading experience. I was also one of the leading contributors of the new typeahead search component. You can see both of these features by visiting French Wikipedia on a non-mobile device.

In my spare time, I love to go on backcountry adventures via backpacking, packrafting, and canyoneering. I moved to Utah, in my opinion one of the most beautiful places in the world, for this reason.

Projects

📱 Side Project
PainPencil

I am working on a mobile app that helps people with chronic pain keep track of their symptoms and activity in order to gain insights into potential triggers and best management of their pain.

📱 Side Project
Nomadnav

In 2021, I created a mobile app that let car campers, van dwellers, and anyone else free dispersed campsites. Internet access can be a high priority for this demographic so a central feature of the app enables users to record their internet speed at a campsite and share it with others.

⚙️ Side Project
Outtraverse

In 2017, I started a blog documenting my backcountry adventures and guiding others how to do the same trips. To make publishing new trips easier, I built a custom static site generator which generated responsive images, route maps, and offline guide pdfs.
